Fjallalopi yarn - How to make the yarn
Something that we think is special about Fjallalopi yarn is the way it is produced. In the manufacturing process, there is a focus on tradition and quality. In addition, the unique properties of Icelandic wool are exploited to the full. Production starts with the collection of wool from Icelandic sheep, which are known for their double-layered fur. This coat consists of a soft and insulating undercoat and a longer, water-repellent outer coat.
The process begins with the shearing of the sheep, where the wool is carefully removed to preserve its quality. After shearing, the wool is thoroughly washed to remove impurities, lanolin and natural oils. This cleaned wool is then sorted and carded, which means that the fibers are straightened out and made ready for spinning.
During carding, the fine inner fibers are separated from the coarse outer fibers, and the two types of fibers are mixed in the right proportion to achieve the characteristic lightness and insulating properties of Fjallalopi yarn. The yarn is then spun on modern machines, which ensure an even and uniform thread.
After spinning, the yarn is dyed, either in natural shades or in a wide range of colored tones, depending on the collection. The dyeing is done with environmentally friendly dyes, which ensure that the yarn is gentle on both the environment and the skin.
Finally, the yarn is carefully dried and wound, ready for sale. Fjallalopi yarn's manufacturing process combines traditional techniques with modern technology, ensuring a product of the highest quality that preserves the unique properties of Icelandic wool. We value these values very much at Nordisk Garn.
How to care for and wash Fjallalopi yarn
Are you also in love with Fjallalopi yarn, but unsure how to care for it? Fjallalopi yarn, as I said, is made from 100% Icelandic wool, and therefore requires special care to maintain its quality and durability. To wash your knitting projects made with Fjallalopi yarn, we recommend hand washing.
Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild wool soap or special detergent designed for wool. Carefully place the knit in the water and let it soak for 10-15 minutes without rubbing or wringing it, as this can cause it to tangle. Rinse the knitwear thoroughly in lukewarm water until all the soap is out, making sure the rinse water is the same temperature as the wash water to prevent the wool from shrinking or losing its shape. Gently squeeze the excess water out of the knitwear by squeezing it lightly between your hands without wringing it. Roll the knit in a clean towel and press gently to remove additional water. Lay the knitwear flat on a dry towel on an even surface and gently shape it back to its original shape. Leave to dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight and heat, to preserve the yarn's natural colors and texture. When storing your finished knitting project, it should be placed in a cool, dry place and avoided hanging up, as this can cause the knitwear to stretch. Feel free to use moth bags or lavender bags to protect the wool from moths. By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your knitting projects made with Fjallalopi yarn remain beautiful and durable for many years.
